Leaders of the INDIA alliance held a consultation meeting in New Delhi at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, a day ahead of the special session of Parliament.
The special session, scheduled from April 16 to 18, is expected to take up amendments related to the women’s reservation law. The Centre has said it plans to implement 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies from 2029.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for support for the proposed changes. As part of the exercise, the Centre is also planning to increase the Lok Sabha’s strength from 543 to 850 seats, and a draft Bill has been circulated to all MPs.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have objected to convening Parliament during the Lok Sabha election period. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has pressed for constituency delimitation, while Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has also voiced opposition.
The meeting at Kharge’s residence was attended by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, DMK MP T.R. Baalu, RJD leader Tejashwi and other alliance representatives.
