Fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, a Gujarat native, is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of more than Rs 13,000 crore along with his relative Mehul Choksi. After the allegations surfaced, he fled India.

Based on information shared by the Indian government in 2019, British police arrested Modi in London. He is currently lodged at Wandsworth Prison.

UK courts have already cleared his extradition to India. However, Modi has now filed a new petition at the European Union’s human rights court in France, seeking to halt the extradition process.

In his plea, he has claimed that if he is sent to India, he could face human rights violations and torture. The court said the proceedings will be conducted confidentially and that arguments from the CBI will also be heard.

If the petition is dismissed, it would remove the final legal hurdle to extraditing Nirav Modi from the UK to India.
