PMK candidate Thilagabama on Tuesday publicly alleged that DMK functionaries in Perambur were involved in cash distribution with the backing of officials.

According to her, she received information late night that money meant for distribution was being kept in a car within areas under Chennai Corporation’s 44th ward. She said she rushed to the spot and alerted the election flying squad, claiming that cash worth around Rs 5 crore was stored at the residence of a local DMK councillor.

Thilagabama further alleged that police and officials reached the location late and conducted the search in a casual manner, while more than 200 DMK workers gathered in the area. She questioned how the DMK came to know about the officials’ arrival and how the alleged cash “disappeared” despite her complaint, also pointing to the absence of a responsible election officer at the time.

Speaking to reporters, she said cash distribution to voters would harm democracy and urged the Election Commission to take strict action.

Meanwhile, she began her campaign on Monday after offering prayers at a Vinayagar temple in Vyasarpadi’s B.V. Nagar, and later paid tribute by garlanding Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s statue near the SIDCO bus stop.
