Kyiv: A group of Russian soldiers reportedly surrendered after being surrounded by Ukraine’s armed ground robots, a development that has drawn attention to Ukraine’s battlefield technology.

Russia launched its war against Ukraine in 2022. In a recent clash, Ukrainian forces deployed advanced unmanned systems that closed in on Russian positions, according to reports.

Unable to withstand the precise strikes, the Russian troops are said to have dropped their weapons and surrendered to the UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles). The reports also note that Ukraine captured a Russian position using only drones and ground robots for the first time since the war began.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media that the move was not just about technological progress, but about identifying and confronting “evil,” adding that Ukraine is using technology to protect the lives of its soldiers.

The incident has sparked wider debate globally, with experts discussing the future role of robots in warfare and the ethical questions that may follow.
