Patna: BJP leader Samrat Choudhary, 57, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Tuesday, marking the first time the party has secured the state’s top post.
The change followed the resignation of JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, who recently took charge as a Rajya Sabha MP. Nitish met Governor Syed Atta Hasnain and submitted his resignation from the chief minister’s post.
After the resignation, Samrat Choudhary—who was serving as Deputy Chief Minister—was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party. He was subsequently invited to form the government and took oath as the new Chief Minister.
JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar said the new government would handle Bihar’s administration and assured his full cooperation and guidance.
Samrat Choudhary belongs to the Kushwaha community. He earlier worked with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD and later with Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), before joining the BJP in 2017 and becoming the party’s state president in 2023.
