Bihar is set to get a new Chief Minister today, with BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chowdhary (57) scheduled to take the oath of office. His elevation marks the first time a BJP leader will serve as Chief Minister of the state.
The change follows the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Janata Dal (United) leader. Nitish, who recently assumed charge as a Rajya Sabha MP, met Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and submitted his resignation letter.
After the Governor accepted the resignation, BJP MLAs held a meeting on Monday. In the meeting, Samrat Chowdhary was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, paving the way for him to form the government.
Reports said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. In a social media post, Nitish Kumar said the new government would now handle Bihar’s administration and that he would extend full cooperation and guidance.
