Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay said his party welcomes the move to pass a bill providing 33% reservation for women in legislatures, which is expected to be taken up in Parliament.

However, he strongly opposed the proposed constituency delimitation exercise linked to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026. Vijay said the Centre’s plan, which he claimed aims to increase Lok Sabha strength from 543 to 850, would significantly alter the composition of the House.

In his statement, Vijay argued that if the amendment is passed, the proportional gap between representation of southern and northern states would widen. He said this could reduce the southern states’ voice in law-making and in shaping central policies, including matters related to language, culture and state rights.

He also warned that changes in parliamentary seat ratios could affect financial devolution, and said Tamil Nadu’s share in population-linked schemes could shrink further after delimitation. Vijay urged the Centre to drop the attempt to pass the 131st Amendment Bill and continue with the existing system.
