RAMESWARAM: Former Tamil Nadu BJP state president K Annamalai said the DMK “should be ashamed” to speak about social justice, alleging that basic facilities remain unmet in Ramanathapuram district.
Campaigning for BJP candidate Nagenthran in the Ramanathapuram constituency, Annamalai said students are forced to travel about 20 km as a boys’ higher secondary school has not been set up.
In a statement, he credited the Union government for establishing a 50-bed hospital in Rameswaram at a cost of Rs 19 crore under the AMRUT scheme. He also said Rs 20 crore was allocated under the same scheme to build 100 shops at the new bus stand.
Annamalai alleged that the DMK conducted an auction at a private hotel and that no shops were allotted to the public, claiming corruption in the process. He further accused the DMK of turning Ramanathapuram into a “garbage city” over the past five years.
He also cited multiple drug-smuggling cases, claiming DMK functionaries from the district were arrested in 2022 and 2024 in cases involving seizures valued at Rs 360 crore and Rs 70 crore, and referred to another case valued at Rs 2,000 crore linked to an international smuggling network.
