Police in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have registered a case against two Congress women councillors for refusing to sing the song “Vande Mataram” during a municipal corporation meeting.
The development comes after the Union Home Ministry issued new guidelines in February regarding the song. The directions state that “Vande Mataram” must be sung before the national anthem at all government functions and in schools.
According to the report, the Indore Municipal Corporation held its budget meeting on April 8. Before the session began, “Vande Mataram” was played.
At that time, Congress councillors Fawzia Sheikh Aleem and Rubina Iqbal Khan allegedly declined to sing, saying they did so due to their religious beliefs. BJP councillors objected strongly.
A social activist, Vikas Awasthi, later filed a complaint with the police. Based on it, Indore Police registered a case and questioned both councillors.
