Chennai: Union Minister L Murugan on Tuesday accused DMK president M K Stalin of running a “malicious campaign” by linking constituency delimitation to political harm for Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, Murugan said the Modi government is moving to implement the landmark law providing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. He claimed that the move would require an increase in the number of Lok Sabha constituencies.

Murugan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have assured that delimitation would be carried out in a way that does not disadvantage any state, including Tamil Nadu.

He alleged that Stalin is using the issue to spread falsehoods as he lacks the ability to seek votes based on the DMK government’s performance. Murugan also questioned what the DMK did when constituencies were decided on a population basis during the earlier DMK-Congress rule at the Centre.

The minister further claimed the DMK does not want the women’s reservation to come into effect and made personal allegations about the party’s leadership and internal politics.
