The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court was informed that the Tamil Nadu government is considering enacting a special law to prevent honor killings. The submission came during proceedings linked to the Tirunelveli murder of Kavin, a 27-year-old IT employee.
The case relates to Kavin’s inter-caste relationship with a woman working as a Siddha doctor at a private hospital. According to the petition, Kavin’s family had received threats from the woman’s relatives.
The petition said that on July 27, 2025, the woman’s brother Surjith called Kavin for a compromise meeting and allegedly attacked him with a sickle, leading to his death. A case was registered by Palayamkottai police against Surjith and his parents, and Surjith and his father Saravanakumar were arrested.
The investigation was later transferred to the CB-CID. The court was told that the CB-CID has completed the probe and filed the final report before the Tirunelveli subordinate court. The government also said Kavin’s family has been paid Rs 6 lakh as compensation under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Recording the submissions, the bench said it cannot direct the government to enact a separate law and closed the petition, noting there was nothing further to be examined.
