Chennai: A political row has spilled onto social media after the DMK voted against a proposed women’s reservation bill in Parliament. BJP and its alliance partners have begun trending hashtags targeting the party.

The proposed legislation sought to provide 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies through a constituency delimitation-related bill. Amid strong opposition from several parties, a vote was held on the move to bring the bill.

With 352 MPs needed for a majority, the proposal received 298 votes in favour and 230 against, leading to its defeat. Congress, DMK and Communist parties were among those who voted against it.

Following the vote, BJP leaders and supporters criticised the DMK, alleging it was opposed to increasing women’s representation in Parliament. Online debates intensified, with BJP and allies pushing #DMKBackstabsWomen, while also amplifying #NDAWithTamilNadu in support of their alliance narrative.
