New Delhi: DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday responded in the Lok Sabha to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks about DMK leaders wearing black during the debate on a Bill linked to implementing 33% reservation for women in legislatures.

The Union government has said it is working to implement the women’s reservation law by the 2029 Lok Sabha election, and has brought a constituency delimitation Bill as part of the process. In protest, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and DMK members wore black and also burnt copies of the Bill, while DMK MPs attended the parliamentary debate in black attire.

Referring to the black clothing, Modi had made a sarcastic comment in the House, saying there is a tradition of applying a black mark before starting something good to ward off the evil eye, and thanked the DMK for doing so.

Kanimozhi countered that the BJP, which claims to protect Hindutva, seemed to have forgotten Goddess Kali. She said Kali, a female deity symbolising women’s power, is depicted in black and is associated with driving away oppression.

She added that the DMK chose the colour black to register its opposition and would continue its fight on the issue till the end.
