The Madras High Court has granted AIADMK former minister M.R. Vijayabaskar time until April 28 to surrender before the trial court in a case related to alleged illegal possession of river sand.

The case was registered in February by Karur Town Police, accusing Vijayabaskar of storing river sand without proper documents.

Earlier, the Karur District Sessions Court had granted him conditional anticipatory bail and directed him to surrender before the magistrate court within a stipulated period, which ended on March 31.

Seeking an extension, Vijayabaskar moved the High Court. His counsel submitted that he was contesting from the Karur constituency on the AIADMK ticket, had filed his nomination on March 30, and could not surrender on March 31 due to the Mahavir Jayanti holiday.

Accepting the request, Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira extended the surrender deadline to April 28. The court also directed him to appear in person at the concerned police station at 10:30 am on April 29, April 30 and May 1.
