Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday (April 19) for a two-day official visit and was given an enthusiastic reception at Colombo airport. This is his first visit to Sri Lanka after assuming office.
During his stay in Colombo, he is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayaka and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya for discussions. He will also hold meetings with leaders of the Indian-origin Tamil community and Tamil leaders from Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern provinces.
The Vice President is expected to address members of the Indian-origin community at an event in Colombo. He will also launch assistance initiatives for families affected by Cyclone Tidva.
As part of India-supported housing programmes for Sri Lankan Tamils, newly built homes have been completed, and he is set to hand over houses to beneficiaries under the third phase. On Monday, he will travel to Nuwara Eliya to inspect housing projects being built with Indian assistance and interact with the local Tamil community.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is being undertaken under the Mahasagar initiative, which prioritises engagement with neighbouring countries, with Sri Lanka described as a key stakeholder in the programme.
