The Madras High Court has directed the Income Tax Department to file its response in a petition alleging irregularities in asset disclosures made by TVK leader Vijay in his election nomination papers.

Vijay is contesting from two constituencies—Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East. The petition claims that the asset details submitted in the two nominations contain contradictory figures.

According to the plea filed by Perambur voter Vignesh, Vijay declared his assets as Rs 115 crore in the Perambur nomination, while stating Rs 220 crore in the Tiruchirappalli East nomination. The petitioner sought an inquiry by the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission to verify whether the disclosures were complete and truthful.

Hearing the matter before a bench led by the Chief Justice, the court observed that showing one level of income and allegedly concealing it in another nomination would be illegal and irregular. The bench also remarked that the alleged concealment of around Rs 100 crore was improper, and ordered the Income Tax Department to conduct an inquiry and submit its reply.
