Iran has said the firing incident involving Indian-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was accidental, after New Delhi lodged a strong protest.
According to the report, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed again amid an ongoing US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Following Iran’s announcement, 20 cargo ships heading toward the strait were diverted toward Oman.
In this backdrop, Iranian military boats opened fire toward some oil tankers on Sunday, including two Indian ships carrying a combined 2 million barrels of crude oil. Officials said there was no damage to the vessels or to crew members.
India condemned the incident and summoned Iran’s ambassador to convey its protest. The government had earlier shared details of 21 Indian ships expected to transit the route to help ensure coordinated and safe passage, but the firing led to vessels turning back.
Iran’s ambassador Dr. Mohammad Badali told Indian authorities the episode was unintentional and stemmed from a communication lapse. India urged him to obtain a firm assurance from Tehran that Indian ships can pass through the Strait of Hormuz without obstruction.
