Election monitoring officials on Sunday said they recovered Rs 13.40 lakh from the Karaikudi office linked to Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, following a tip-off about cash being stored there.

According to officials, the team reached the MP’s office and found the cash on the premises. While questioning was under way, two office functionaries allegedly grabbed the cash bag and fled on a two-wheeler.

Officials attempted to chase them, but a group of Congress workers at the spot allegedly took the key of the flying squad vehicle, disrupting the pursuit.

After receiving information, ASP Aziz Buniya and Tahsildar Raja arrived at the location and began an inquiry. Police and officials said a person identified as Palaniappan, accused of taking the vehicle key, has been called for questioning as the search continues for those who fled with the cash.
