Chennai’s Thiru Vi Ka Nagar constituency has seen an internal ripple within the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) after party leader Thol. Thirumavalavan campaigned against ADMK candidate Porkodi, the wife of late BSP state president Armstrong.
According to the report, Thirumavalavan had earlier objected when a seat in the DMK alliance was allotted to the VCK, saying the party would not contest against a leader who, like him, fought for oppressed communities. In contrast, he later took the field in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar against Porkodi.
Porkodi is contesting on the ADMK side, while Puratchi Bharatham party leader Jagan Moorthy is also contesting in the ADMK alliance on the ‘two leaves’ symbol from KV Kuppam in Vellore district.
Some VCK functionaries said many in the party had received help from Armstrong in the past and therefore continued to hold his family in high regard even after his death. They added that Thirumavalavan had earlier conveyed greetings when Porkodi launched a party and chose to contest on the ‘two leaves’ symbol, leading them to expect he would not campaign against her.
They said his decision to campaign against Porkodi has caused unease and dissatisfaction among VCK members.
