Dubai: A prominent UAE political commentator has said the Emirates no longer needs the United States for its security and should close American military bases located in the country.
Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a political science professor and well-known analyst, made the remarks as the war waged by the US and Israel against Iran has crossed 50 days, according to the report.
In response to the attacks, Iran fired missiles at US military bases across West Asian countries, causing heavy damage in the region.
Abdulla argued that the UAE has demonstrated it can defend itself independently during the Iranian strikes. He added that while the UAE may still seek advanced weapons from the US, that does not require hosting US bases.
He said the country should prioritise acquiring modern military capabilities and strengthening its own defence systems using the best available technology, rather than maintaining foreign bases.
