Kerala Police have issued a warning about a cyber fraud targeting Vivo and iQOO smartphone users through fake software update messages. The scam is designed to trick users into installing malicious software that can lead to theft of sensitive information, including banking details.

According to a statement from the Kerala Cyber Police, victims may see an urgent on-screen prompt claiming a software update is required. When the message is clicked, an app titled “OriginOS Update” gets downloaded, appearing similar to an official company update.

Police said that once the fake update is installed, control of the phone can be taken over by the fraudsters. This access could be used to obtain bank account information and potentially siphon money.

Authorities advised users who may have clicked such links to immediately disconnect their internet connection. They also recommended changing bank and social media passwords using another phone.

Those who have suffered financial loss have been asked to contact the cyber helpline number 1930, the statement added.
