Kathmandu: Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has resigned just days after taking charge, following allegations and public criticism linked to shares and related matters.

Gurung was appointed to the post in Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s newly formed government after the Rastriya Swatantra Party won the recent parliamentary election. He had been serving as home minister since March 26.

In a statement, Gurung said ethical standards mattered more than any position and that public trust was paramount. He said he was stepping down immediately so that an honest inquiry could be conducted and to ensure he did not use his office for personal gain.

The resignation comes amid broader pressure on the new government. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shah removed Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Kumar Shah after allegations that he misused authority in an appointment linked to his wife.

Separately, protests have erupted over the government’s decision to impose mandatory customs duty on goods worth more than 100 rupees brought in from India, with residents near the border warning of livelihood impacts. Demonstrations have also been reported against a policy move to ban student organisations affiliated with political parties, alongside protests condemning the allegations against Gurung.
