People working in major cities such as Chennai and Coimbatore have alleged that adequate bus services were not arranged for travel to their hometowns.
With the Assembly election approaching, many residents of these cities have been heading back over the past two days to cast their votes in their native places.
The rush peaked on Tuesday night, with large numbers attempting to leave for their hometowns.
At the Kilambakkam bus terminus, heavy crowds were seen until around 4 am on Wednesday. As buses were insufficient, some passengers staged a protest.
Transport officials later intervened and held talks to pacify the crowd, according to reports.
