Statement from Sattur

Sattur MDMK MLA Raghuraman has said he joined the BJP because he did not receive due respect from government officials despite winning on the ‘Udhayasuriyan’ symbol.

Issue raised on firecracker units

Raghuraman said revenue officials were conducting inspections at firecracker factories and sealing units. He noted that when more workers are employed for livelihood, accidents and deaths can occur, and he had urged officials to reopen units quickly once deficiencies were rectified in suspended factories.

‘My requests were ignored’

According to him, his representations were not acted upon, leaving him distressed and disengaged from election-related work for a period.

BJP leaders met him

He said Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran and former minister Kadambur Raju met him, after which he accepted their request, joined the BJP and resumed election work.

Political background

Raghuraman had earlier left his government doctor job to work for MDMK general secretary Vaiko. He contested in 2016 under the People’s Welfare Front and lost, and later won in 2021 on the ‘Udhayasuriyan’ symbol after the MDMK-DMK alliance was formed. He also served as the MDMK’s Virudhunagar central district secretary.
