Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said anti-incumbency sentiment against the West Bengal government is at its peak.

In an interview, Shah claimed that a similar mood existed during the previous election as well, but alleged that polling then was not conducted in a free and fair manner. He alleged that several booths were captured, people in many villages were prevented from leaving, and BJP workers were unable to vote.

Referring to the current election, Shah said the voter list was cleaned up first, with bogus voters removed. He also claimed that names of infiltrators were deleted from the rolls.

He added that the administration, police and central security forces had made comprehensive security arrangements, and that the Election Commission was focused on preventing irregularities. Shah said this had allowed public anger to be expressed freely, and asserted he was fully confident the results would be in his party’s favour.
