Chennai district witnessed an unusually high voter turnout in the latest election, with polling recorded at 83.73%. The surge was seen across constituencies, including Kolathur—where Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is in the fray—and Perambur, contested by TVK leader Vijay.

Historically, Chennai has been among the lower-turnout districts in Tamil Nadu elections. In the 2021 Assembly election, the district recorded 59.40% polling. Ahead of the current election, the voter list was revised, removing names of deceased and relocated voters.

The final electoral roll in Chennai includes 28,93,505 voters13,95,716 men, 14,96,921 women, and 868 others—including 74,089 first-time voters who have turned 18. The contest is described as a four-cornered fight involving DMK, AIADMK, NTK and TVK, with 419 candidates across 16 Assembly constituencies.

Polling arrangements included more than 30,000 personnel comprising election officials and police. Facilities such as shade, drinking water, and wheelchairs for senior citizens and persons with disabilities were provided, while colour-coded guidance was used at locations with multiple booths.

Voting began briskly from 7 am, crossing 50% by 1 pm, and ended with most constituencies reporting over 80%. Kolathur recorded 86.11% and Perambur 89.79%. Sealed EVMs have been stored under police security at Anna University, Queen Mary’s College and Loyola College, with counting scheduled for May 4.
