New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Suryakant on April 24 said he was happy, as an Indian citizen, to see the high voter turnout recorded in the recent Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Polling was held in a single phase for all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, while West Bengal voted in the first phase for 152 constituencies. The Election Commission reported turnout of 85.15% in Tamil Nadu and 92.72% in West Bengal.

The remarks were made during a hearing related to SIR. The CJI said that when people exercise their right to vote, it strengthens the democratic system.

The Supreme Court also appreciated the role of central security forces in ensuring peaceful elections in a state that has a history of violence during polls.

On pending issues including alleged deletions of names from electoral rolls after the SIR exercise, the bench directed petitioners to approach appellate tribunals for redressal.
