KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took a swipe at the ruling Trinamool Congress, saying the “spice” of the masala pori he ate during a campaign stop has “stung” the party amid the West Bengal Assembly election.
West Bengal, governed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, is voting in phases for its 294 Assembly seats. The first phase of polling for 152 constituencies was held on Wednesday, with the second phase scheduled for April 29.
During a recent campaign event in Jhargram, Modi bought and ate masala pori from a roadside stall—an item considered a popular local snack. Following the incident, Banerjee and Trinamool leaders criticised the Prime Minister.
Addressing a BJP public meeting in Krishnanagar for the second phase campaign, Modi said BJP would celebrate its victory in the state on May 4, and that sweets along with masala pori would be distributed.
He also claimed that violence during this election has been at its lowest level in his 50 years in politics, and congratulated the Election Commission, saying it had restored the dignity of democracy in the state. Modi further said the polling percentage in this election would break previous records.
