Search at candidate-linked residence
Officials seized unaccounted cash totalling Rs 99.99 lakh from a house in Ganesh Nagar, Thoothukudi, linked to Congress candidate Amirtharaj of the Srivaikuntam constituency. He was reportedly staying at the residence while campaigning.
Flying squad action
Based on information that cash was being stored at the house, a flying squad team conducted a search and seized Rs 62.49 lakh that was said to be without proper accounting. A person named Suresh, who was present at the house, was questioned.
Income Tax raid in another room
Separately, Income Tax officials carried out a search from midnight through early morning in another room of the same house. They seized Rs 37.50 lakh allegedly kept without any supporting documents.
Case registered; notice planned
The Thenpakkam police registered a case. As Amirtharaj could not be contacted, officials said they would send a notice seeking an explanation regarding the seized cash.
