Chennai district recorded an 83.71% voter turnout in the Assembly election, even as a large gap emerged in postal voting by government employees and police personnel, according to election data.
Across the city’s 16 Assembly constituencies, Chennai has 28,93,505 voters, including 74,089 first-time voters who have turned 18. Of the total electorate, 24,22,097 votes were polled.
The turnout marks a sharp rise compared with the 2021 Assembly election, when 24,03,495 votes were cast out of about 40 lakh voters, translating to 59.24%. Compared with 2021, Chennai recorded 18,602 more votes this time, and 2,41,504 more votes than the 2024 Lok Sabha election tally of 21,80,593.
In Kolathur, where DMK chief ministerial candidate M.K. Stalin is contesting, votes increased from 1,71,656 in 2021 to 1,82,364 now. In Perambur, where TVK chief ministerial candidate Joseph Vijay is contesting, votes rose from 1,99,410 to 2,03,057.
R.K. Nagar reported the highest turnout in the district at 90.53%, though its vote count fell from 1,86,636 in 2021 to 1,80,473 now. Meanwhile, postal voting saw a major shortfall: of 52,047 eligible postal voters in Chennai, only 32,447 cast their ballots, leaving 19,600 who did not vote.
