New York: The New York Times has reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is living with serious injuries and is now able to walk only with the help of a prosthetic leg.
According to the report, a joint US–Israel air strike on Iran on February 28 killed then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Following this, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen as the country’s new Supreme Leader, though details about his condition were kept largely secret.
The newspaper said Mojtaba was also badly wounded in the same attack, and that Iran’s administrative authority has since been handed to a panel of military generals. The group is described as functioning like a corporate executive team, taking major decisions including those related to war.
The report further claimed Mojtaba has undergone three surgeries on his leg and will need a prosthetic limb to walk. It also said his face and lips were severely burned, making it difficult for him to speak, which is why he has been issuing only written statements instead of video messages.
The New York Times added that he may require plastic surgery for the facial injuries.
