Tamil Nadu has emerged as the highest power-demand state among the southern region, prompting the Union power ministry to warn that electricity shortages could increase from next month.

The ministry released comparative demand data for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry, comparing March 2025 with the latest March figures. Across the southern states, daily power demand rose from 69,934 MW to 73,805 MW.

Tamil Nadu’s demand increased from 19,679 MW to 19,822 MW, placing it at the top. Demand also rose in Andhra Pradesh (13,107 MW to 14,011 MW), Telangana (17,162 MW to 18,548 MW), Karnataka (18,395 MW to 18,655 MW) and Kerala (5,334 MW to 5,844 MW), while Puducherry saw a slight dip from 483 MW to 476 MW.

The Union ministry has cautioned the state power utility that Tamil Nadu may face power shortages during evening hours from next month. A power board official said demand and supply projections have been assessed in advance and power purchase steps are being taken to manage any shortfall.
