Chennai: The release of final, constituency-wise voter turnout details for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections has been delayed, even as polling concluded peacefully.
The election was held across 234 constituencies with 5.73 crore eligible voters and 75,064 polling stations. In a four-cornered contest involving DMK, AIADMK, TVK and Naam Tamilar Katchi, a total of 4,023 candidates were in the fray, including 935 from political parties.
According to the information available so far, turnout stands at 85.15%, with about 4.88 crore voters casting their ballots. More than 85 lakh eligible voters did not vote. Following the end of polling, the model code of conduct was eased, flying squads were withdrawn and vehicle checks were stopped; no complaints seeking re-poll have been reported.
Officials in the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer’s office said that after polling, Form 17C from each district election officer is verified and sent to the Election Commission, along with a dedicated register containing detailed statistics, including the identification used by voters and gender-wise turnout.
However, they said 10 district election officers are yet to submit the final turnout report, and polling in over 300 booths in those districts still needs verification. The Election Commission is expected to publish the final figures once the pending checks are completed and reports are received.
