The Election Commission has released polling details for Chennai district’s 16 Assembly constituencies, showing that 4,72,319 registered voters did not cast their ballots. Women recorded a higher turnout than men, according to the data.

Chennai district has 28,93,505 voters, including 74,089 newly eligible voters who have turned 18. The election is seeing a four-cornered contest involving the DMK, AIADMK, NTK and TVK, with 419 candidates in the fray across the 16 constituencies.

Polling was held on April 23. Of the total electorate, 24,21,186 voters—83.68%—cast their votes. Postal ballots are estimated at around 32,000, though the final count is yet to be completed.

Compared with the 2021 Assembly election (before the special revision of the voter list), Chennai recorded 17,691 more votes this time. However, when compared with the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the number of votes polled is lower by 2,40,593.

Within the district, R.K. Nagar recorded the highest turnout at 90.56%, though it still saw 6,103 fewer votes than in 2021. Turnout percentage has also declined compared to the previous Assembly election in constituencies including Villivakkam, Thuraimugam, Aayiram Vilakku, Anna Nagar, Saidapet and Mylapore. The District Election Officer said sustained awareness campaigns at places such as Marina Beach and other public gathering spots helped improve turnout over the last election.
