Cybercrime police have warned that pornographic cyber-extortion scams are increasing across India, with students and young people among those being targeted. Gangs allegedly lure victims into compromising situations, record video clips and then demand money.

Police cautioned that in today’s digital environment, sharing personal details with strangers or engaging in explicit behaviour over video calls can lead to serious consequences. They stressed that the belief that videos, audio or photos “won’t be recorded” is a dangerous misconception.

The advisory said social media must be used responsibly, and that intimate content should not be shared even with known persons. According to the warning, men are often trapped by unknown fraud groups, while women may get caught after sharing images or videos with a boyfriend or friend.

The police also flagged cases where women’s photos are morphed into fake explicit visuals and used for threats, or private videos are used to demand money. In such situations, they said paying out of fear can worsen the problem, and victims should come forward to file a complaint immediately.
