Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday condemned the killing of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee in West Bengal, calling it a shocking incident.
In a statement, Rahul alleged that the murder took place after the elections and blamed “goons linked to the Trinamool Congress”, accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of fostering an atmosphere where democracy is not functioning.
He said intimidation, attacks and suppression of dissent have become the hallmark of the Trinamool Congress. Rahul added that the Congress does not believe in violence and will continue to follow a path of non-violence and constitutional values.
Rahul demanded the immediate arrest of all those responsible and strict punishment. He also called for full security and compensation for Debdeep Chatterjee’s family, asserting that his party would not bow to politics that tarnishes India’s non-violent tradition.
