Heavy traffic congestion was reported on Sunday near Singaperumal Koil in Chengalpattu district as people began returning to Chennai after the Assembly election polling.

With the weekend break and travel to native places coming to an end, many commuters are heading back to the city ahead of office schedules. Large numbers of travellers from districts including Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and southern and western regions were on the move the same day.

The rush led to a slow-moving queue of vehicles on the Trichy–Chennai National Highway. Government express buses, omni buses, cars and mini vans were seen arriving continuously towards Chennai.

From Singaperumal Koil to Thirutheri, vehicles reportedly crawled, with the line stretching beyond two kilometres. Motorists faced difficulties as police personnel deployed at multiple points worked to regulate traffic, though congestion continued due to the steady inflow of vehicles.
