Sri Lanka’s narcotics officers have seized drugs worth about Rs 110 crore from 22 Buddhist monks who arrived from Thailand at Colombo’s international airport, in a case that has triggered shock and scrutiny.

Acting on a tip-off received on the night of April 25, officials searched the group’s belongings after they landed. The inspection led to the recovery of around 110 kg of narcotics, with up to about 5 kg allegedly found with each person.

Investigators said the drugs were concealed in secret compartments inside suitcases that also carried school supplies and packets of sweets, suggesting an attempt to disguise the shipment as routine baggage.

During questioning, the monks reportedly said they had travelled to Bangkok on April 22 using tickets provided by a sponsor. Authorities also examined their mobile phones and found photos showing them in regular clothing abroad.

The 22 were arrested and produced before a court, officials said, as the investigation continues into the network behind the alleged smuggling attempt.
