Roadshow ahead of second-phase polling
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, campaigning in West Bengal, said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) must be implemented, arguing that the aim is to ensure that multiple marriages are not permitted in India.
Behala event as campaign ends
Shah made the remarks during a roadshow in the Behala constituency as campaigning for the second phase of the Assembly elections, scheduled for April 29, was set to conclude. Thousands of party workers gathered and welcomed him during the event.
Claims on peaceful polling
In his address, Shah said the election in West Bengal was being conducted peacefully this time and claimed there had been no untoward incidents. He also referred to past elections, saying people were aware of the loss of lives that used to occur during polling.
Political attack and prediction
Responding to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s criticism that BJP rallies lack public participation, Shah urged her to “come out and see” the support on the ground. He predicted that the BJP would form the government with a clear majority in the upcoming Assembly election.
