Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has urged couples to have at least two children, saying he would also welcome families choosing to have three or more.

Speaking on population trends, Naidu recalled that around 30 years ago he had campaigned to build public awareness on controlling population growth, and said the target was achieved within a decade.

He said the situation has now changed, particularly in South India, with the share of elderly people rising—an issue he noted is being seen not only in India but in several countries.

Pointing to China’s experience under a one-child policy, Naidu said the country is facing population decline. He added that he is now promoting “population management” and has shifted from earlier messaging that “one is good, two is enough” to stressing a minimum of two children per couple.

Naidu reiterated that while two children should be the minimum, he would welcome couples opting for three or more children.
