Counting is under way for Gujarat’s local body elections held on April 26, with the results being closely watched ahead of next year’s Assembly polls.
The election covered 15 municipal corporations, 34 gram panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats, totalling about 9,200 posts. BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party were in the fray.
Voter turnout was reported at 55% in municipal corporation areas, while overall turnout stood at 67%.
As per trends and early results, the BJP has secured four municipal corporations—Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad and Vapi—each of which was recently upgraded to municipal corporation status.
In Mehsana, Morbi and Nadiad, the Congress failed to win even a single ward. The BJP is also leading in more wards across Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Anand, Karamsad, Gandhidham, Navsari, Porbandar and Surendranagar.
