Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated development projects worth ₹4,000 crore in Sikkim, and reiterated that the Union government would do everything possible to accelerate growth in Sikkim and other Northeastern states.
Speaking at an event in Gangtok, Modi said the Centre is committed to strengthening Sikkim’s infrastructure. He highlighted plans to improve connectivity and boost tourism, including a proposed expressway from Bagdogra in West Bengal and a ring road in Gangtok.
Calling the eight Northeastern states India’s “Ashta Lakshmis”, he said they represent diverse forms of prosperity and well-being. Modi described tourism as the backbone of Sikkim’s economy and said improving transport facilities would help increase tourist arrivals, portraying the state as a destination for peace, spirituality and wellness.
He also said efforts are being made to improve sports infrastructure in the state, with a focus on helping talent in disciplines such as football and archery achieve higher milestones.
Modi criticised the Congress for allegedly neglecting Sikkim and the Northeast for a long period, including in healthcare. He said the current government is focused on upgrading health infrastructure and providing quality, affordable medical services to people.
