UN calls for free navigation in Hormuz

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and allow ships to pass without obstruction, according to a statement shared from New York.

The appeal comes as the US-Iran conflict has been temporarily paused. US President Donald Trump has said the ceasefire will remain in place until talks between the two sides lead to an agreement.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—described as a key route for global energy supplies—has been affected by the conflict. Guterres said navigation rights must be protected and called on the concerned parties to “open the Strait of Hormuz” so vessels can move.

He also urged that there be no customs duties or discrimination, and said trade should resume so the global economy can function. Safe and uninterrupted passage, he added, is both an economic and humanitarian necessity.
