New Delhi: The Union government has ruled out any increase in petrol and diesel prices, seeking to calm public anxiety triggered by rumours of a hike after the ongoing Assembly election phase.

International crude oil prices have risen following an attack on Iran, leading several countries to adjust retail fuel rates. In India, however, fuel prices have not been revised, even as speculation resurfaced ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly polls scheduled for April 29.

The rumours sparked panic buying in parts of Andhra Pradesh, where vehicles reportedly queued up at petrol pumps and some outlets ran out of petrol and diesel.

Addressing reporters in Delhi, Petroleum Ministry Additional Secretary Sujata Sharma said the government is in touch with state administrations and monitoring retail outlets. She said ensuring adequate fuel availability is being prioritised and there is no shortage anywhere.

Sharma reiterated that there is no proposal to raise petrol or diesel prices and appealed to the public not to believe rumours or resort to panic purchases.
