Chennai: With Tamil Nadu Assembly election results set to be announced on May 4, the Congress has once again raised its pitch for a share in power if the DMK-led alliance returns to office.
Ahead of the election, Congress—an ally in the DMK front—had sought a bigger role in governance and demanded more seats. The party had also indicated it was weighing other alliance options if its demands were not accepted, creating pressure on the DMK during seat-sharing talks.
After prolonged negotiations, the DMK agreed to allot additional seats to Congress, while the question of a power-sharing arrangement was effectively kept off the table. Congress leaders then largely stayed quiet on the issue.
Now, just days before the results, the demand has resurfaced. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar said the party was continuing discussions on its demands and would no longer remain “neutral” in state politics, adding that it would seek what it is entitled to after the results to strengthen the party.
Congress leaders said his remarks were an indirect reference to the “share in power” demand. The renewed push, coming close to the results day, has again put the DMK in a tight spot, according to the report.
