Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said petrol and diesel vehicles will have no future in the coming years, citing concerns linked to imports and environmental impact.
Speaking at a conference in Delhi, Gadkari said vehicle manufacturers must increasingly move towards alternative fuels such as biofuels, CNG, LNG and electric vehicles. He noted that conventional fuels continue to pose serious challenges on both economic and ecological fronts.
He also highlighted the government’s push towards hydrogen-based mobility. According to him, pilot initiatives are already underway, with hydrogen-powered trucks and buses being operated on 10 routes.
Gadkari described hydrogen as the fuel of the future and pointed to ethanol as another key fuel option. He said India is producing ethanol from raw materials and that vehicles are being run on E20 fuel, with adoption steadily increasing.
