India has called for uninterrupted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that attacks on commercial vessels are unacceptable and threaten global trade.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on tensions in West Asia, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Yojna Patel, presented New Delhi’s statement. She described assaults on merchant ships in the strait as deplorable and a matter of concern for India’s energy and economic security.
India stressed that commercial vessels must not be targeted during military operations, and said such actions deserve condemnation. The statement also noted India’s concern over the loss of Indian sailors’ lives in the ongoing conflict.
India said endangering ship crews or obstructing freedom of navigation and trade through the Strait of Hormuz cannot be accepted. It urged full respect for international law and called for the early restoration of safe, secure and unhindered shipping and global trade through the route.
