Tamil Nadu’s School Education Department has issued a set of advisories to teachers, students and parents as summer temperatures rise. Director Kannappan asked schools to take steps to reduce heat exposure and prevent heat-related illness.
Students have been advised to avoid staying in direct sunlight between 12 noon and 3 pm. Teachers have been instructed not to conduct open-air classes, outdoor games or physical exercises during this period.
Schools have also been told to ensure students drink water regularly, with teachers providing time at the start of every period and confirming adequate intake. The department said indoor games such as chess and carrom should be given priority.
The advisory asked students to avoid coffee, carbonated soft drinks and beverages with high sugar content. It also urged extra caution for infants, pregnant women, senior citizens and people with heart ailments.
Officials listed headache, dizziness, vomiting, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat and fainting as possible signs of heat impact, and said medical help should be sought immediately in severe cases, including through the 108 emergency service. If symptoms of summer-spreading illnesses such as chickenpox, mumps and smallpox are noticed, affected persons should be isolated to prevent transmission.
