Perarivalan, who was released after being convicted in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has recently enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council. The move has drawn strong objections from Congress leaders.

Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan said the day of his enrolment should be seen as a “black day”. While noting that he was freed by the Supreme Court, she argued that allowing him to practise law sets a wrong precedent.

She said she has sent petitions to the President and the Prime Minister seeking cancellation of Perarivalan’s enrolment.

Former Tamil Nadu Congress arts wing president and party spokesperson Chandrasekaran said the development was painful for those who support the Congress and admire Rajiv Gandhi. He urged the Bar Council to withdraw the registration, comparing it to calls for lawyers to boycott certain categories of accused persons.
