New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is of Indian origin, said he plans to urge Britain’s King Charles III to return the historic Kohinoor diamond to India.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are on a visit to the United States. During the trip, they paid tribute at the memorial for victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks by laying a wreath.
Mamdani met King Charles at the event. Speaking to reporters beforehand, he said he would raise the issue of returning the Kohinoor, though it remains unclear whether the diamond was discussed during their conversation.
Buckingham Palace declined to offer any comment. The Kohinoor, weighing 105.6 carats, was taken by the British East India Company from Maharaja Duleep Singh under the 1849 Treaty of Lahore and is currently displayed at the Tower of London, set in Queen Elizabeth’s crown.
